TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) — Elder Care Services is spreading the warmth. That’s the name of the program that provides space heaters for free to local seniors in the Tallahassee area.
"I can’t handle the cold weather," said Tallahassee resident Virginia Thomas.
That’s why Thomas wanted to get a space heater. "I’m so excited about it," she said.
While Thomas has central heating in her apartment, she says a space heater is greatly needed for her in her bathroom.
"Once you get out of the shower, it’s a big draft. So, with the heater being in here, that’s going to help a lot," Thomas said.
The "Spread the Warmth" initiative is a part of Elder Care Services’ senior outreach program.
At the start of the heater drive in early January, 135 seniors were on the waiting list.
Thanks to community donors, Elder Care Services has distributed heaters to 189 seniors since.
Program staff says it makes a big difference because many seniors served are home-bound and don’t have the ability to go buy a space heater themselves, or may not have the money to get one.
Abby Cooke with Elder Care Services says it can also help seniors cut back on heating costs.
"Especially when you’re trying to buy medicine and you’re trying to buy food. Just those daily costs of living, to know that your utility bill is low, can make that money stretch even further," Cooke said.
As soon as Thomas got her space heater, she took the time to figure out all the functions and the perfect spot to put it.
"When it gets real cold, I’m gonna be ready," she said.
